My advice to all my students has always been to move out of their comfort zone and to get on top of their game to become a successful DJs. I strongly believe that musical knowledge is also essential, not in the terms of theory (though it helps), but in the terms of knowing your music style and other genres that may influence it. Being a successful DJ is all about creating a meaningful story with your music that people relate to.

Respect Time – Turning up late to gigs will never help you succeed. All famous DJs turn up at least an hour or two before their scheduled time. Turning up early helps you meet other artists, engage with your audience, and to prepare for any last-minute changes or updates. Organizers trust artists who turn up on time and are more likely to get more gigs
Build your Audience – Today social media has changed the way we look at the music scene & artists. Make a mix tape of your sets and share it on SoundCloud or MixCloud for your audience to listen to your style of music. Both platforms have a global reach. Promote yourself on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. publish music and images taken from your gigs, share knowledge, and experience, and make your presence felt. Out of sight is out of mind.
Network – To get business, you need to be present at the right places at the right time. Meet other artists and their managers, attend gigs of other artists, network and appreciate their style of music. Always remember, if you want others to attend your gigs and appreciate your music, you need to do the same. It is equally important to network with the right of people, Artists, Artist Management Companies, Club Owners, and fans.
Focus on Your Music Collection – If you have to be a successful DJ, you constantly have to play different and unique music at your gigs. People do not like to listen to the same track in every performance. Repeating 10% of your music is still OK. Listen to different genres as well to get inspired if you are also a music producer. Experiment with samples & fillers if you play using your laptop & a controller. It is important to engage with your audience when you are behind the console, and you can only engage if your music is good.
Self Belief – It is primary to have full confidence in yourself and your abilities as a good DJ. Have a vision of who you want to be and where you see yourself after a few years. You can accelerate your career faster if you have that required confidence as a DJ or a Music Producer. When stuck, take opinions or advice from those who you respect or follow.
What If You Don’t Succeed?
Well, I guess, it all depends on what success you have. I think success as a DJ means being the best in what you do and getting respect for your work. You can not compare two artists as everyone has a different journey. You can take inspiration from others, but never make a benchmark for measuring your success with others. Just enjoy your journey & believe in yourself and put all of your passion into your music & sets.
