Pishacha is among the most common vampires in Hindu folklore. They are usually known for consuming blood, having bulging veins, and swollen eyes. You may have seen or listened to them in history. They are kept separate from humans and are believed to have their own language. 

It is also believed that humans can not become or transform into Pishacha. If you wonder, ‘are vampires real in India’, let us tell you that some legends or ancestors say that Pishacha was created by Brahma, one of the Hindu Trimurti and powerful God in the Hindu religion. According to the stories, Pishachas can change their forms and possess the power to become invisible. Stories also claim that they can enter the human body and use them to feed on others, or they can cause illness. It is believed that anyone who sees Pishacha is doomed to die within nine months. 

One of the powerful ways to protect against Pishacha is to chant certain mantras along with participating in religious rites like puja.

Vetala

Vetala is believed to be another vampire. Also known as ‘Vetaal’ or ‘Baital’, they tend to inhabit the human and animals’ bodies to create havoc. Usually, they occupy dead bodies, but they can enter victims and manipulate them. It is also believed that bodies buried improperly are in more danger of becoming possessed by Vetala. The concept of Vetala is different from other vampires. They are vampires with separate entities and take the human body. The soul of the body is completely in control of the Vetala.

Pey and Peymakilir

Pey and Peymakilir were vampires of South India, Tamil, and they used to choose to hunt the wars and battles. Tamil people have their own myths about Pey and Peymakilir. Pey is believed to be a vampire of battleground and war, whereas peymakilir is a female character who does a traditional dance when she devours a bloodied corpse. 

Both play different characters, peymakilir is quite deadly and fearsome. She prefers to devour the flesh of the dying and dead people, whereas pey drinks their blood. They feed on the fallen soldiers, and they are not always dead when pey and peymakilir vampires begin to feed them.
