Recently, HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) gained attention after its outbreak in China. Reports suggest that hospitals are overwhelmed in some areas, but Chinese authorities and the World Health Organisation haven’t declared a state emergency yet. India has also recorded 5 HMPV cases– 2 in Karnataka, 1 in Gujarat, and 2 in Tamil Nadu. Malaysia and Kazakhstan also reported some cases of this virus.
HMPV, or Human Metapneumovirus, causes respiratory problems in individuals. The first HMPV case was discovered in 2001. This virus spreads through the respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. It also spreads via direct contact with those who are infected. This virus is known to cause illnesses ranging from mild respiratory discomfort to severe complications, especially in infants, senior citizens, and people with weak immunity.
Mild HMPV case symptoms include a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever like a common cold. Moderate symptoms are persistent cough, wheezing, and fatigue. In severe cases, HMPV can lead to bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, etc.

HMPV cases can last from a few days to weeks. There is no specific treatment available for HMPV virus. Treatment for this virus varies depending on the severity of the infection. Rest and adequate hydration are enough for mild cases. Over-the-counter medications help manage moderate symptoms, such as fever and nasal congestion.
HMPV is less likely to become a pandemic. However, health experts share people must take precautions. They are requested to wear masks, maintain social distancing, etc.
