1. The Sudanese military seizes control in a coup, detains the prime minister.

Sudan’s military seized power on Monday, dissolving the transitional government hours after forces detained the prime minister, and thousands poured into the streets to denounce the coup, which jeopardised the country’s fragile democratic development. According to the Sudan Doctors’ Committee, security forces opened fire on some of them, killing three demonstrators and injuring another 80.

The takeover was condemned by the United Nations, the USA and the EU. This has occurred two years after protestors forced the removal of longstanding ruler Omar al-Bashir and just weeks before the military was to hand over the control to the ruling council.

2. America enacts new and relaxed foreign travel vaccine regulations 

According to the White House, US President Joe Biden issued updated guidelines on Monday, requiring new vaccines for foreign travellers and ending the severe restrictions on India, China, and parts of Europe, beginning from November 8. The unusual travel restrictions in the United States were first implemented in early 2020 to combat the spread of Covid-19. Non-US citizens travelling from the United Kingdom, the 26 Schengen nations in Europe, Ireland, Iran, Brazil, India, South Africa, or China within the last 14 days are prohibited.

3. As the ad business slows, Facebook invests billions in metaverse efforts.

Facebook Inc announced on Monday that it will report the financial results of the augmented and virtual reality venture as a different unit, and is investing billions in the “metaverse,” as the main advertising business is under “significant uncertainty.” Facebook reported a 17 per cent increase in third-quarter profit, cautioning that Apple Inc.’s new privacy measures will hurt its digital business this quarter. According to Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, owing to iOS modifications, the quarterly revenue is below the market forecasts.

4. The state of emergency was lifted in Egypt for the first time after 2017

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced the lifting of Egypt’s state of emergency on Monday. Egypt declared a state of emergency in April 2017 in response to deadly church bombings and has prolonged it at three-month intervals since then, despite improving security.

5. Ammunition recovered from the shooting scene in the Baldwin film

On Monday, an inventory of confiscated materials revealed that loose and packaged ammunition were found from the Western movie set where actor Alec Baldwin unintentionally shot and killed a cinematographer. The type of ammunition removed from the set of “Rust” was not specified. Two cartons of “ammo,” “loose ammo and boxes,” and “a fanny pack with ammo” were among the listed items.
