INS Brahmaputra, the elite ship and leader of the Indian Navy’s guided missile frigate class, caught fire on July 21, 2024. The ship was undergoing maintenance at the naval dockyard in Mumbai when this accident occurred.
After the fire accident, the navy said, “Despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to the upright position. The ship continued to list further alongside her berth and is presently resting on one side.” It added, “All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom the search is in progress.”
The chief of the naval staff, Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, informed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh about the fire that broke out on the Indian Naval Ship Brahmaputra. Mr Rajnath Singh, in return, expressed sadness over the incident and prayed for the safety of the missing sailor.
The ship’s crew and firefighters brought the fire under control from the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, and other ships in the harbour. After this, sanitisation checks were carried out to identify if residual fire had been left.

INS Bramhaputra joined the Indian Navy in April 2000, marking the debut of the indigenous ‘Bramnhaputra’ class-guided missile frigate. A crew of 40 officers and 330 sailors operated this formidable ship.

The ship is fitted with medium-range, close-range, and anti-aircraft guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, and torpedo launchers. INS Brahmaputra also has multiple sensors on it and can operate the Seaking (an anti-submarine warfare helicopter with double engines) and the Chetak( A two-tone class multi-purpose helicopter).
