China confirmed that it will expel more US Journalists, in a notably damaging attack on international media coverage of the country – and an expansion of the China-US standoff over the media between Beijing and Washington.

New York TimesWall Street Journal and Washington Post Journalists and Staff summoned to stop media coverage and leave immediately in response to new US ban on Chinese media.

The statement, announced right after midnight Beijing time, orders American citizens employed for the New York Times, Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal to stop reporting and handover their press card within 20 days, in case their credentials are expiring before the end of 2020.

China didn’t confirm how many US journalists would be affected by this expulsion over US media.

In general, China usually offers only 1 year visa and press cards to journalists, so the China-US standoff is more likely to halt most correspondents. It will exterminate some of the major and the biggest media companies in China and expel journalists with extensive experience covering country news to leave immediately.

Journalists working with American media will not be allowed to work in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. The self-autonomous region that provided a base for China correspondent denied to get a visa from the Chinese authorities.

“They will be restricted to work as members of the American media in the People’s Republic of China, along with Hong Kong and Macao – special administrative regions,” The ministry of foreign affairs said on Tuesday.

“The US dismissal of Chinese media was an upgraded evidence of political oppression,” posted Hua Chunying on Twitter on Thursday. “The Chinese journalists have not been treated fairly under the prejudicial policies of the US.”

“This is clearly an expansion in the tit-for-tat between Washington and Beijing. But the scale and scope of it is surprising, disproportionate and unpredictable,” said Yuen Chan, senior lecturer in journalism at London university.
