Former US President Donald Trump mentioned a potential cabinet position for Tesla CEO Elon Musk if he wins the 2024 US Presidential Elections. He indicated that his intention behind this tie-up is to eliminate the EV (Electric Vehicle) Tax Credit.
Trump expressed skepticism, stating that tax credits and tax incentives are generally not good. He indicated – “if he was elected, he might reconsider the policy.” Donald also spoke positively about the Tesla CEO when asked if he would consider Musk for an advisory or cabinet role. He said – “He (Elon Musk) is a smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it. He is a brilliant guy”.
However, Trump clarified, “I am not making any final decision. I am a big fan of electric cars, but I’m a fan of gasoline-propelled cars, as well as hybrids and whatever else happened to come along.”
Not only the elimination of the EV Tax Credit, but the former President also discussed potential changes to auto industry policies. He indicated amendments to discourage vehicle exports from Mexico and prevent Chinese automakers from establishing plants in the US market. He explained, “If you put tariffs on those cars, they will make it here. It’s very simple. It’s not complicated. If you tell Mexico, look, you’re stealing our car industry, which they’re doing now.”
Trump also expressed that “I want to make my own cars.”
Elon Musk hasn’t expressed his views on this matter. However, Trump supporters believe that Musk’s involvement could bring a fresh perspective to the administration and help revitalise the American automotive industry. They believe that Musk’s innovative mindset and business acumen could be key in driving economic growth and fostering technological advancement.
