The Mental Health Benefits Of Being On Or Near The Water

From a very young age, we have always been encouraged to get outside and enjoy the green spaces that surround us. Life has changed somewhat from 30 to 40 years ago and now a lot of people and children live in heavily built-up areas in large cities and towns where the closest green space is literally miles away. Nature has a great way of calming us but if you have to travel too far in the car just to experience some green areas then it might be an idea to look elsewhere. What is now known as ‘blue space’ is becoming a lot more popular and more readily available to us. Just being near water or around it for any length of time is very good for both your psychological health and your physical health as well.

When people arrive at a lake, river, canal or the beach, we immediately start to relax and our stress levels fall as a direct result. Some people take it a little bit further and they invest in a boat that will allow them to travel out onto the waves and to really enjoy everything that these blue spaces have to offer. The installation of boat hatches allows us to easily go below deck and to rest our eyes due to all of the fresh air that we will be experiencing. If you are not yet sold on the benefits of being on or near water, maybe the following can help to change your mind.

  • The therapeutic effects – It’s likely that your mental health is suffering due to the amount of responsibility and stress that you have in your life every single day. If you are working at the office all day and then you have to return to your home where the kids are very demanding then this can take its toll on your overall mental health. The ability to be able to make your way to a body of water is all that you need to help calm yourself down and it also gives you a sense of perspective.
  • It boosts your mood – You remember when you were smaller and your parents went to the seaside quite regularly. The very thought of knowing that you’re going to the beach instantly made you feel better until the day finally arrived when you got to go for a real. The same excitement stays with us as adults and so when you make the trip to a body of water and then you get to sit and relax around it, it helps to boost your overall mood and you feel better about yourself in no time at all.
  • It is restorative – Your confidence levels and your energy levels take a real hit every day of the week that you’re working hard at the office and so you really should take the time to make sure that you get close to water at least once a week so that you can enjoy the restorative benefits of it.

Purchasing a home near any body of water is relatively expensive and so for most of us, it’s going to take a short drive to get us to where we need to be. Water has been calming us down for years and so make sure that you use this free source to keep yourself grounded and to provide you with the essential mental health benefits.
