The Fascinating History of Singapore

The Fascinating History of Singapore

Singapore is one of the most important cities in the world.  Centrally located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, it has developed into a modern hub of worldwide trade and commerce.

It has the largest port in Southeast Asia, which is one of the busiest in the world.  Its location dominates the Strait of Malacca which connects the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea.

Ancient Singapore

Singapore Island was originally inhabited by fishermen and pirates.  Initially an outpost of the Sumatran empire, it was a vassal state of different kingdoms until 1819 when the British came to the island and set up a colony.

The people of Singapore are a mix of Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, and other Asians, as well as descendants of Chinese immigrants with either Malay or Indonesian heritage.

The Peranakans are defined by their descent from the first Chinese settlers to the area.  Their culture is a unique blend of ancient Chinese culture mixed with the local cultures of the region.  Intermarriage between Chinese settlers and the local Malay, Javanese, and Thai resulted in a distinctive hybrid culture.

If you plan to visit the area there are many 5-star hotels in Singapore where you can stay in comfort.

British Rule

From the 16th through 19th centuries the area was gradually taken over by European colonial powers.  The Portuguese arrived, and then the Dutch.  In 1819 the British established a port in Singapore.  The East India Company wanted a secure position at the head of the Straits of Malacca to counteract Dutch influence.  1824 a treaty between the British and the Dutch ceded Malay and Singapore to British rule.

The population grew swiftly and by 1871, it was a city of over 100,000.  The city continued to prosper and develop as a trading post.  The addition of key banks, commercial associations and Chambers of Commerce also contributed.

World War II

Singapore suffered during World War II when it was attacked by the Japanese in December of 1941.  The British military commanders were confused when the Japanese attacked from the North, who had expected an attack by sea from the South.  Despite superior forces, the British surrendered to the Japanese in 1942.

When the Japanese surrendered the island was turned over to the British Military Administration.  In 1959 Singapore became self-governing although Great Britain continued to exert influence in the area.

Modern Singapore

Singapore has been called the 20th century’s most successful development story. Rapid growth, full employment and very good social indicators are the result of a modern economic transformation.

Singapore is one of the best places in the world for business. Singapore has become a hub for financial services, energy and biotechnology.  Tourism has also developed into a major industry.  As many as 19 million visitors visit Singapore annually.

Singapore has liberal entry requirements for tourists.  A valid passport with 6-month validity and a completed SG Arrival Card is all that is required.

Singapore is a modern gem and well worth putting on your list of “must-see” places.
