Staying Healthy as a Mom-to-Be in Maine

The months leading up to the birth of your child are an exciting time, but they can also be somewhat stressful. It’s not easy keeping up with the physical demands of pregnancy, and for many women in Maine, it’s easy to let health fall to the wayside when you’ve got baby showers to plan, shopping trips to make, doctor’s visits to book, and all the other responsibilities that come alongside being a new mom. Looking after your health is important, however, both for your own sake and the sake of your developing baby. Even though Maine has a lower maternal mortality rate than the US as a whole, there are several things that women in the area should keep in mind during pregnancy to ensure that you and your child are both safe and sound.

Keep Warm and Cozy

As all Maine residents know, winters in the state can be brutal. Away from the coast, Northern Interior weather stations may record as many as 40 to 60 days of sub-zero temperatures annually. Spending time in the cold can be dangerous for pregnant women, as it can affect the transfer of oxygen between mother and child. Letting your body temperature drop can also increase your risk of coming down with an illness, which could be potentially life-threatening for your developing baby. 

Maine moms-to-be should make sure to bundle up when they head outdoors in the winter. It’s a good idea to layer your clothing, including a waterproof outer layer to keep yourself dry. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat are all good ideas as well. Staying warm will help to keep your blood flowing, boosting circulation and ensuring that your baby gets the nutrients and the oxygen he or she needs. By taking care of yourself you’ll reduce the chances of any complications during childbirth. However, should complications arise – some of the most common ones being excessive bleeding and failure to progress – make sure to consult your lawyer who’ll be able to help you gauge whether it was an OBGYN malpractice or not. 

Eat a Balanced Diet

Being overweight or obese during pregnancy can greatly increase your risk of complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and gestational diabetes. With 30% of Maine’s population classifying as obese, it’s essential that women consult with their doctor about their weight if they’re thinking about getting pregnant. While it’s not always possible or even advisable to lose weight during this time, it’s still a good idea to adopt healthier eating practices during and after pregnancy, both for your own benefit and that of your baby. Never be tempted to take diet pills and ensure that any regular medications you take are safe during pregnancy. Make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins such as fish or chicken in your diet. 

During pregnancy, it’s crucial that you take care to look after your health. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean that you need to go all out and make major lifestyle changes. Simple steps such as staying warm and eating a balanced diet can go a long way towards keeping both you and your baby safe, happy, and healthy.
