The Indian external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, will visit Pakistan to participate in the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation) Summit 2024. The meeting will be held in Islamabad on 15 and 16 October. Th is is the first time in almost a decade that an Indian foreign minister will travel to Pakistan, making it a historic moment.
Apart from S Jaishankar, Chinese Premier Li Qiang will also attend the summit, increasing its importance. Considering the significance of the meeting, Pakistan has decided to place a security lockdown in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The recent attacks and political protests by Imran Khan’s party supporters are other reasons for this lockdown.
The two-day SCO meeting is being held during the West Asian war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Jaishakar’s visit also comes against the backdrop of the recent J&K election. So, every meeting, statement, remark, or even a small gesture will be thoroughly inspected for signs of a possible thaw.
