Getting Around Phuket Like a Local

Getting-around-phuket

Phuket is one of the best places in Thailand to visit.  This stunning gem is located on the south-west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea.  It is both an island and a province and is connected to the mainland by the Sarasin Bridge.

With a population of almost 500,000 and 46 beautiful beaches, it can be difficult to know where to stay.

Here is a detailed overview of all the main areas so you can choose the area that best suits your needs.

Patong

Patong is on the west coast of the island.  It is one of the most popular areas for tourists and expats alike.

It combines a vibrant nightlife scene, shopping and entertainment options.  If you enjoy bars and the typical tourist holiday this is the place for you.

There are a lot of choices for accommodations.  There is everything from budget accommodations to 5-star hotels in Patong

Karon

This area is popular with expats and families who prefer something quieter than the scene in Patong.

The area is known as being family-friendly with activities for all ages.  You can enjoy mini golf at Dino Park, or enjoy swimming and water sports on beautiful Karon beach.

You can find a small community of painters and craftsmen on side streets away from the beach.  Watch as one of these creates a masterpiece in front of your eyes.

Kamala

North of Patong is Kamala.  It is quieter and more laid-back when compared to some of the other popular tourist areas of the island.

Kamala Beach is a 2 km long stretch of spotless white sand.  It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque beaches on the island. The beach is great for swimming, sunbathing and relaxing.

There are plenty of beachfront bars and restaurants where you can while away the hours relaxing.

There are lots of outdoor activities, including some of the best surfing in Phuket. If you are looking for a relaxed beach vacation, then Kamala might be the place for you.

Rawai and Nai Harn

Nai Harn and Rawai are located near the southern tip of the island.  Nai Harn is special because much of the area is owned by a Buddhist Monastery which has left the area less developed than other parts of the island.

Nai Harn is another well-known surf spot and is probably one of the least frequented beaches on the island.  In addition to water sports, you can go hiking in the nearby hills, kayaking in the mangrove swamps, or visit nearby islands

Rawai is a few miles further down the road on the southern side of the island.  It is a working fishing village.  It’s a great place for pictures, but not the best beach for bathing or swimming.

If you want a vacation with lots of local flair and culture, then Rawai and Nai Harn are a good choice.

The Thai government has made it easier than ever to obtain a tourist visa.

Phuket offers a unique combination of natural beauty, culture, and affordability that makes it a great place to visit for those who enjoy a tropical getaway.
