All About Real Number

In the number system, real numbers are simply the sum of rational as well as irrational numbers. In general, all arithmetic operations can be performed on these numbers, and they can also be represented on a number line. Simultaneously, imaginary numbers are unreal numbers that cannot be expressed on a number line and are commonly used to represent complex numbers. Examples of real number include 23, -12, 6.99, 5/2, and so on. In this article, we will discuss the definition of real numbers, their properties, and examples of real numbers with detailed explanations. This article will go over real numbers, their properties, and other topics.

Do You Know What Roman Numerals Are?

Roman numerals are a type of numerical notation that was previously used by the Romans. The Roman Numeral system is an additive as well as subtractive system in which letters are used to denote certain base numbers and arbitrary numbers in the number system, each of which is denoted by a different combination of symbols.

The Roman letters are the English alphabets, but not all alphabets are Roman. Out of the 26 English alphabets, there are 23 Roman letters, with the exception of J, U, and W, which are not considered Roman and as a result, the Roman letters are as follows: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, V, X, Y, Z.

These letters are all used to represent Roman numbers. In the form of roman numerals we write the year 2019 as MMXIX, for example.

Learn Conversion of Roman Numerals

A number is defined in roman numerals as a collection of the symbols or letters C, D, I, L, M, V, X written in a specific order (Example, M’sM’s first, followed by D’sD’s, C’sC’s, etc.). Learning how to convert roman numerals isn’t easy but can be practiced to learn it better.

In general, subtractive notation is used to avoid four characters in sequences such as IIII or XXXX, let’s go through the few examples given below:

  • If “I” comes before V or X, it represents one less, four is IV (one less than 5), and nine is IX (one less than 10)
  • If the letter “X” is placed before the letter L or C, it represents ten less, so 40 is XL (10 less than 50), and 90 is XC (10 less than 100)
  • If “C” comes before D or M, it represents a hundred less, so 400 is CD (100 less than 500), and 900 is CM.

Properties of Real Number

There are many properties of real numbers. Let’s look at few of the properties mentioned below:

  • Any non-zero real number can be either positive or negative.
  • The sum along with the product of two non-negative real numbers yields another non-negative real number, which indicates that they are closed under these operations and form a positive cone, resulting in the real numbers being ordered in a linear order along a number line.
  • The real numbers are an infinite set of numbers that cannot be objectively mapped to the infinite set of natural numbers; that is, there are countably infinitely many real numbers, whereas the natural numbers are countably infinite. This establishes that there are more real numbers than elements in any countable set in some sense.

What Role Do Real Numbers Play in Our Everyday lives?

In everyday life, real numbers are extremely useful. Real numbers assist us in counting as well as in measuring the quantities of various items. So, for example, if anytime you ask your partner how many slices of toast he or she wants for breakfast, you are using real numbers when they respond.
